Makiko Tsumura

Makiko Tsumura is Director of the Japan Institute of Design Promotion (JDP), where she leads initiatives spanning design research, education, international collaboration, and the Good Design Award (G Mark), Japan’s leading comprehensive design award. Since joining JDP, she has expanded international collaboration through the Good Design Award with partners across Asia, Europe, and the Americas. She has also helped develop new initiatives supporting young designers, design education, research, and collaboration between designers and manufacturers. Since September 2025, Makiko has served as President-Elect of World Design Organization (WDO)®, becoming the organization’s first Japanese President-Elect in 50 years and the first Asian woman to hold the position.
